Taking this class has given me a critical understanding of the importance between language and culture in advertising. We discussed topics surrounding stereotypes, prejudice, and targeting throughout the semester. I now have a better understanding of how words, symbols, rituals and even colors can have different meanings across cultures.
During the semester, my partner and I created an ad analysis paper where we analyzed a specific subculture group. We analyzed Black Americans and the messages behind existing ads targeting them and the cultural significance of those ads. We then made a creative brief for our final portion of the paper which was to make an ad that is targeting our subculture group.
My partner and I decided to make an ad for Visa promoting a Black Lives Matter credit card that earns consumers 5% cash back when shopping at Black Owned Businesses.
