SMAD 305: Magazine Production in Italy

I have had the privilege to study abroad in Urbino, Italy where I worked alongside other classmates to produce magazine, Urbino Now, a magazine created by JMU students depicting the culture of the Marche Region of Italy. This was an experience that immersed me in a different and broadened my visual understanding of the world through design.

I worked alongside other students in the program to make the final product of the magazine. Together we rebranded Urbino Now, a magazine that has been in circulation at JMU for years. We wanted to rebrand to create a more modern design that better depicted the town through color and typography. I worked with Cooper Crowell, Anna Thornton, Caroline Shelly, Nicole Basile, Rebecca Smith, Lauren Nordseth, Madeline Edwards, and Anelise Johnson for this amazing final product. The teamwork we displayed made this project possible.

I designed and formatted the page spread for Sophie Difranceso, a fellow student in the program who wrote the story. I have also had the opportunity to visit the mask making studio along with Washington Post photographer Bob Reeder to take photos of handmade leather masks. I used Adobe software to create the spread as well as explored different typefaces and photo editing techniques for the final spread.

I worked alongside Nicole Basile to compile the color palette for this project. Nicole and I used photos from Urbino to display in the magazine. We wanted to showcase the beauty of the city and the wide array of colors in the magazine.
